The first settlers of this area arrived around 1833 when Nottawasaga Township was first surveyed. The cemetery at East Nottawasaga Presbyterian church had its beginnings with the purchase in 1849 of a block of land on the 4th line, at what is now 1545 Fairgrounds Road, Clearview, Simcoe County. A frame church was built in 1854, and bricked in 1881. Nine people had been buried on the grounds by the time the church was built. The parishioners were mostly immigrants from Scotland, particularly the island of Islay in the Western Isles.
The church held regular services until 1979, when the congregation was amalgamated with Stayner. Once-yearly services continued until 2013. The church was abruptly demolished in a controversial decision by the Presbyterian church in 2022, despite attempts to purchase it and restore the near-170 year old historic structure.
Over 400 people have been buried in East Nottawasaga cemetery in the 170 years since it was established, including frequent surnames of Bell, Campbell, McQueen, Morrison, and Paul. People are buried in the cemetery dating from deaths in 1847. Burials peaked at an average of six per year in the decade of the 1880s, and have declined to infrequent single burials in recent years.
