Cemetery notes and/or description:
This cemetery is found going north from Monte Vista on Highway 285 or south from Center, turning on the 5 Mile Road West, crossing the Rio Grande and will be on right hand side where the church St Francis of Assisi is located. From Del Norte going east on Highway 160 turning left at the sign for Seven Mile Plaza and the church will be on the left side. The address of church is 5615 West County 5 N, Del Norte Co. The cemetery is in fair condition, needs a good fence and there is no grass, only weeds, and rows are not well defined. There are numerous graves with no headstone and others with markers, but cannot be read. This area became a satellite settlement of the Loma de San Jose in the early 1870. It is not clearly known when the first burials were, but can be speculated they were in the 1870's. The church was built in 1881, It is not used for weekly masses any more, there is ongoing action at the present time, (August 2001) to obtain a historical grant for the church and cemetery.

The inside of the church is in good condition and is kept clean by Roy and Mary Manzanares with the linens being changed on a regular schedule, however the structure of the church is in need of some repair.. Contact them for a tour of the church.

Buried under the altar of the church is Juan Pio Valdez who died in 1888 and Maria Nestra Salazar Valdez who died in 1886.

Thanks to John Valdez, Roy Manzanares, Maria Martinez, Archie Sanchez, Gilbert Sanchez, Levi Manzanares, and Alex Martinez for recording this cemetery
