|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This cemetery is no longer in existence. It was located near present day Slade's Chapel. Local historians believe, however, that some of the bodies were never moved. There were two A.M.E. churches in this area in 1886; Slades and Bethel. The cemetery was on the edge of a large gulley called "Break-neck", and in the summer of 1886, heavy rains caused an area of 50 to 75 feet of the graveyard to be washed away. Coffins were exposed and some of the graves apparently slid into the gulley.
News reports in the Morganton Star state that 15 bodies were moved to the new (Olive Hill) cemetery on Saturday and by Sunday all the bodies were decently buried. It is not known if "all the bodies" meant the entire cemetery or just those affected graves. The gulley was eventually filled in and there is no sign of the graveyard today; roads and buildings cover some of the area. Low ground is all that is left of the gulley.
