Busby Cemetery

Cemetery notes and/or description:
The Busby Cemetery was located in the SW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 4, Township 28, Range 13 on the south bank of Cotton Creek, NW of Copan. There were only 36 grave stones or markers here, but many unknown graves. Because of the inundation of this site at the time of the building of the Copan Dam, the U.S. Corps of Engineers had this entire site moved. The new site is in the NW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 16, Township 28, Range 13, in the northern part of the town of Copan and approximately two miles south of the original site. A total of 125 graves were moved to the new site in November 1979. Approximately 50 of these are Unknown and have a grave marker. I have not listed these in the cemetery as there is no real point in doing so.

In March of 2003, I was provided a copy of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cemetery Relocation Plan for Busby Cemetery, dated August 1978. The grave # in the interment information is the Corps of Engineers' record of the disinterrment and reinterrment. Where available, the name of the relative authorizing the move is listed.

If you would like further information concerning the relocation project, you may contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tulsa District Office or the Copan Project Office. Also, the relocated Busby Cemetery is now owned by the Delaware Indians and their deed to this cemetery is a matter of record at the Washington County Courthouse.

A Special "Thank You" to Mary Nunneley for her assistance with this cemetery.
