The Johnstown floods of 1889 and 1936 did much damage, as did Hurricane Agnes in 1972. The grave markers which remained standing were transcribed on May 8, 1977, by Roxie Thompson, totalling 114 names. On a return visit, twelve weeks later (two weeks after the July 20, 1977, flood) only about a dozen markers were high enough above the silt, fallen trees and debris to be read.
In 2001-2002, volunteers organized by Gary Wakefield reclaimed the cemetery, removing more than 2 feet of silt and locating approximately 150 graves. Most of the markers were recovered and stood upright.
