notes from Garry L McGlaughlin on rootsweb.com
I thought some of you might be interested in a recent exposition that
Dan Wagner and I just went on in Noble County to locate a cemetery that my
3rd Great Grandfather William Waggoner, and 4th great grandparents Rebecca
(Shirley) and James Spencer are buried in. The only thing Dan and I had
going for us was the information printed in the Cemetery book and recorded
by Lois Blake and Margaret Ogle back in 1974, the 1876 Platt map and Aerial
Photo map and Dan's ability to read a map and my feelings of inspiration.
The cemetery is located in Olive Twp., Sec. 29, Noble County. The
property is owned by the Ohio Power Company with no maintained roads leading
to it. It would appear that there possibly hasn't been anyone into this
cemetery since Lois Blake did her survey in 1974. The existence of the one
time road was filled with Multiflora Rose of 10 to 12 feet high and sizeable
I am sure it was divine inspiration that first led us to what we feel
was the foundation to a house or some type of building, and pure
determination to fight through the almost impenetrable brush and brambles,
but there it was lying well hidden from the view of the unsuspecting viewer.
I was within 10 feet of the first stone before it was obvious that we had
found what we were looking for.
Although Ms. Blake stated the location was well fenced, time has
certainly taken it's toll and left only remnants to be seen. The condition
of the "Wagner Cemetery" is deplorable. It has been my understanding that
the County or Township is responsible for maintaining both cemeteries and
access to them, but this has not been the case here.
We found the stones that Ms. Blake had registered plus one other. Some
of the stones are on the ground and several were completely buried. The
brambles are so thick we had to crawl on our hands and knees to move around
in many places and to chop away what brush we could.
UPDATE: On19 October, 2013, Garry L McGlaughlin returned to this cemetery with Michael Fromholt and others. The cemetery is in very poor condition, but we were able to find some of the markers that were found on his first visit. The land is leased to a private individual for hunting, so permission needs to be obtained to visit. Please note however, that the trek in is difficult and not recommended during the growing season.
The cemetery is located in Olive Township, Noble County, Ohio, and is # 9119 (Wagner Cemetery) in “Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003”, compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
