The square used to be directly next to the sea, but land reclamation has left it further away from the shoreline. The men buried here were killed in the explosion of the "Intrepid" in Tripoli harbor on September 4, 1804. Thirteen men were killed in the explosion. Parts of their remains lie here, while others lie in the Old Protestant Cemetery of Tripoli. |
