Cemetery notes and/or description:
The two Camberwell cemeteries are within close proximity to one another in Honor Oak, South London, Both have noteworthy burials and architecture and they are an important source of socioeconomic data in recording the historical growth and changing demography in the community for this part of Southwark over the past 160 years.
Honor Oak Crematorium and the offices of Southwark's Bereavement Service are in Camberwell New Cemetery. The cemetery was opened in 1927 and the Church of England section was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. Woodcock Hough the Lord Bishop of Woolwich. Honor Oak Crematorium opened in 1939 is notable for it's beautiful stained glass window.
The cemetery is located on Brenchley Gardens about half a mile from the old cemetery. In the early 20th Century it was recognised that the original cemetery would be at capacity in the near future. The land for the new cemetery was purchased in three lots in 1901.The first interment took place on the 23rd May 1927. A smaller section was set aside for use of Free Churches.Camberwell Cemetery and Crematorium has 199 wargraves and 56 cremations of WWII Military personnel.Recorded here are the names of over a thousand civilian victims of enemy action during WWII; the final disposition of their remains is actually unknown.
