|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Matkins Cemetery is located in Butler Township, on the west side of what was once the town of Matkins in the southwest portion of Harrison County. The town was founded by and named after Thomas Matkins and was a thriving little town with several stores, a church, school and blacksmith shop during the 1880s through the early 1900s. By 1940, the only buildings that remained were the church and one house.
Matkins and the adjacent cemetery are located approximately ten miles southwest of Bethany. From Bethany, go three miles west on Highway 136 to Route BB and turn south (left). Go four-and-a-half miles south on BB to Route P and turn right (west). Go west just over two miles. The remains of the town of Matkins is on a gradual "S" curve in the road. The cemetery is on the north (right) side of the road just past the town and at the end of the "S" curve. It is adjacent the blacktop and is very well maintained.
