Thiessen Cemetery
Jansen, Jefferson County, Nebraska, USA
Martin Barkman (1821-1894) settled in Jefferson County, Nebraska in July 1874. His property was located at the present site of the town of Jansen. His wife Margaretha Reimer Barkman, Jan 1819-30 Sep 1874, died in September shortly after they arrived. We find no other trace of her elsewhere, so we assume that she may be buried here, since this was the first known cemetery of our Mennonite People.
Martin Barkman then married Elizabeth Thiessen,28 Jan 1842...21 Jul 1881, Johann F Thiessen sister. Elizabeth Thiessen and Martin Barkman had six children but none of them lived.
1)Johann Barkman 15 Oct 1875-1875
2 & 3) twins 13 Nov 1876-15 Nov 1876
4)Elizabeth Barkman 1878- 2 Jan 1879
5)John Barkman 25 Mar 1879-21 Jul 1879
6)Elizabeth Barkman 20 Jul 1881-Oct 1881
Elizabeth passed away the day after her baby was born.
We always knew that Grandfather Johann F Thiessen was very fond of his sister Elizabeth, so I am sure that he would have seen to it that they were laid to rest near his family.
*From a letter from Mildred Wiebe Ediger to Marjorie Harms Leeb.
