Grainger Cemetery
Also known as Martin Cemetery
Green Sea, Horry County, South Carolina, USA
Martin Cemetery is located in the woods off of Lake Circle in Green Sea, Horry, SC.
There are many sources that call this the Martin Cemetery (HCHS, SCV,the Family that owns the land, and HCBAR). Dennis Todd asked the neighbors in the area and they told him Grainger Cemetery; most likely due to the fact that the past 5 generations who owned the property were Graingers.
Per a family member, the cemetery is and will always be called the Martin Cemetery because the Martin ancestors passed down this cemetery though the family who are now Graingers.
Teresa Hilburn, niece to Thema Grainger who owned the land until her passing in 2004, states:
"Hugh "Collier" Grainger, in a 1908 deed referred to the cemetery as the "Martin Graveyard". He and his wife are buried there, and his 1916 SC death certificate states he is buried in the Martin Graveyard. The origin of the name "Martin" goes back even further than the Graingers in land ownership to my great-great grandfather, Eli West Martin, who owned the land prior to the Graingers."
HCBAR****************
Number of Gravesites: 20, although given the layout of this cemetery more likely exist
Previous Inventories: SCV & HCHS
Oldest Grave: 1879, Eliza Jane Grainger, although wooden markers may predate
Number of Markers: 19
Notes of Interest: This cemetery was featured in an article in the Loris Scene by Teresa Hilburn, who accompanied us on this inventory. The cemetery may have been associated with the original Mt Zion Baptist Church Cemetery ", since the original Church was located on the same land as the Cemetery, too the South East" (notes the present owner of the land Dollie Hardee) in the 1880s.
