|Chapel Hill (Orange County)|
North Carolina USA
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Northeast of Chapel Hill off Erwin Road (SR-1734, formerly Mt. Moriah Church Road) almost directly opposite the front entrance of Mount Moriah Baptist Church. The cemetery is about 250 feet east of the road, across the field in a clump of cedars, box trees and hardwoods. The site is visible from the church steps and from Erwin Road.
Additional information: In 1974, this fifty square foot fenced cemetery encloses several large old box trees and 5 rows of marked graves, 27 in all. A dense carpet of periwinkle covers the cemetery, now unkempt and covered with vines and brambles. There are extraordinarily handsome tombstones, possibly the handsomest in the county. John Tapley Patterson is said to be buried in one of the unmarked graves here.
