|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Buford is in both Gwinnett and Hall counties. The church and cemetery are in Hall County, between Buford and Lake Lanier Islands.
Bethlehem United Methodist Church was founded in 1825 by Methodist minister Dr. John Bowman of North Carolina. Rev. Bowman, his wife Mary, and other family members are among those buried in the church cemetery.
The church initially met in a brush arbor until a log building was constructed. In 1870 a wood frame church was completed, and Noah Pirkle (Rev. Bowman's son-in-law) and John Robert Pirkle (his grandson) purchased additional land and began construction of a rock masonry at the spring, which supplied fresh water to the community. The present church building was completed in 1995.
The cemetery is believed to contain more than 50 graves that are no longer marked, or that are marked in some way (such as with stones) but have no inscriptions. Among these are the graves of an unknown number of Native Americans.
