The frontier community of Gibbon was settled by homesteaders who made the land run into the Cherokee Outlet of Oklahoma Territory in 1893. They started at the Kansas line just three miles north of Gibbon. The town was named for Wm McGibbon, a Union Civil War soldier and first Postmaster, who died 25 Dec 1921, age 74 at his daughter's home in New York and he asked to be returned to Gibbon for burial. His tombstone is one of the 15 remaining there. The Gibbon postoffice operated from 26 Mar 1896 to 28 Feb 1945.
Nothing remains to mark the community except an old grain elevator and the inactive cemetery. There is no actual road into the cemetery, which is in the middle of a field. From SR 32, 3.5 miles south of Manchester OK, go 3.25 miles east on country road past the old Gibbon elevator. Across from the elevator are some ruined cinder block buildings; turn in there on a narrow dirt path and follow the trail around the outside of the pasture fence toward a couple of lone cedar trees to the tiny fenced graveyard with a metal gate.
