Cemetery notes and/or description:
Named for Clay Point community. Land donated by Mr. and Mrs. John Ruthberg when established in 1883. (Clay County Place Names, 1976 pp. 39-40)

The Swedish Congregational Church: Historically, the Swedish congregation was a product of the movement for religious freedom that had swept through the mother country during the middle of the 19th century and carried to America. A “free church” congregation was formed in 1874 at Komstad, Glenwood Township, as a Swedish Mission Church. It was affiliated with the Mission Synod. At about the same time, a congregation, known as the Clay Point Free Church and associated with the Ansgarius Synod, came into existence in the southwestern part of Garfield Township…. The Clay Point congregation remained small in membership and eventually united with the Dalesburg Baptist organization in 1906. (Schell, Chapters Out of the Past, 1985, pp.280-281)

Eighteen-year old Eric Martinson of Vermillion, South Dakota received his Eagle Scout honor, after restoring the Clay Point Cemetery, 8 miles north of Vermillion.

Located near University Road 8 miles north of the Hwy 50 bypass at Vermillion. Earliest stone is dated 1883; last burial was in 1953. Used by both the Swedish Mission Church and Baptist denominations since at least 1883. A cemetery association was established in 1895 and a plat was filed in 1926 by Joel Lundeen and C.S. Danielson, officials of the “Clay Point Cemetery, a corporation.”

Researchers may wish to check the original Knudson records housed at the Centerville Museum or copies archived at the Austin-Whittmore House in Vermillion for other annotations or updates.
