|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This cemetery has not been active since at least 1990. According to the headstones, the most recent burial was in 1962. Current obituaries often add to the confusion when they refer to burials in "Heron Lake Cemetery" when they would more precisely say Lakeside which is the official name of the Heron Lake CITY cemetery or Sacred Heart which is the official name of the Heron Lake Catholic cemetery. Both have separate pages on Find a Grave. Anyone creating memorial pages should pay careful attention to the cemetery name. No recent burials should be listed in this cemetery.
Townships in Minnesota are geographical subdivisions of counties with some powers of governance. Often no town of any kind developed within the township. Often there are a town, township and county with the same name widely scattered across the state. In this case Heron Lake Township is several miles from the town of Heron Lake which is in Weimar Township.
Historically in rural Minnesota, cemeteries were associated with particular churches and only to be used by members of that congregation. This required townships and towns to provide places of burial for those who had no congregational affiliation. Burials in township cemeteries were often later removed to larger cemeteries in nearby towns. 44192 860th St./Hwy 24 which is
