Cemetery notes and/or description:
The GLADER CEMETERY is located two miles east of CR 25 (Olinda Trail) on the north side of Glader Blvd on a knoll overlooking South Center Lake. It is the oldest Lutheran cemetery in Minnesota (established 1855), and was established by Anders Glader, to accommodate the members of Chisago Lake Lutheran Church of Center City. In March of 1871 he conveyed title of the cemetery to the trustees of the Chisago Lake Lutheran Church for $50. His first wife Elin Svensdotter Glader (1808-1855) was the first person known to have been buried there.
All of the visible markers have been photographed and added to the memorials. The Chisago County Historical Society records indicate there are a number of unmarked graves in this cemetery. These records have been added, including any notations that place the interment at this location. Although Glader Cemetery is well maintained it no longer is used for interments. There has been only one burial since 1921, that was Willard S Smith, (1915-1975).
Glader Cemetery is the cemetery chosen by Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973) as the final resting place for his fictional characters Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson in his novel The Emigrants (1949). All four of his novels are popular in Sweden and generate interest in finding this pioneer cemetery.
Some readers of the novels, and those who have seen the Swedish musical Kristina from Duvemåla, have made a pilgrimage to the Glader Cemetery with flowers to place on Karl Oskar's and Kristina's graves. Unfortunately for these travelers, there are no markers or monuments to be found. This cemetery is managed by: Chisago Lake Lutheran Church 1 Summit Avenue Center City, MN 55012 Phone: (651) 257-6300
