Cemetery notes and/or description:
Saint Paul's church, also known as Borough Church was built in 1739. It is the sole colonial-era building which survived the various wars that Norfolk has witnessed. Following his defeat at the Battle of Great Bridge, Lord Dunmore attacked Norfolk from the sea as he fled Virginia on January 1, 1776. The church was the only major building in the city to escape substantial damage in the assault, though a cannonball did strike its wall. The Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the Society of the War of 1812 in the Commonwealth of Virginia have been researching Revolutionary War patriots and War of 1812 veterans known to be interred or memorialized in this historic burial ground.
