DIRECTIONS: Traveling northwest through the park from Wilsondale toward Doane: About 1/4 mile north of the blocked bridge at the swimming pool, turn left at the Park sign that says TICK RIDGE ROAD with an arrow pointing left across the creek. The unincorporated DOANE sign is close to there. Follow the dirt and gravel road along for about a mile around to the group camp complex, where you'll see the green CEMETERIES sign. Continue forward on up the mountain and you'll see some beautiful scenery along the way if the weather is warm. Be warned that if there has been a lot of rain, the road could be washed out and craggy in the low spots so drive cautiously wet or dry.
Continue going all the way up, several miles, until you see a car path that splits off to the right - the road up to this Marcum Cemetery. There isn't a parking area, so just pull over to the side to park and lock your vehicle. You should be able to see the shelter from here, if not from your car then a few steps on up the car path you will see it. The graveyard starts just before the shelter and a walking path continues back into the hollow with graves on both sides of the path. The location of that shelter is where the old Tick Ridge church house once stood.
NOTE: Memorial Day Weekend the road up to those cemeteries named on that sign can get very busy at times, especially on Sunday from late morning through the afternoon. The mountain tradition in this area of the country calls this Decoration Sunday, when all family graves are to get fresh flowers. You should adjust your visit accordingly to avoid cramped parking. And please, ENJOY THE VIEW.
GPS coordinates given are at the base of the hill at the group camp in Cabwaylingo.
