Father Lawrence Beck, pastor of Sacred Heart parish, New Philadelphia, began the creation of the Roswell (known as Vickers until 1906) Roman Catholic parish, known as the Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, after a census in May of 1901 showed a sufficient Catholic population. The cornerstone for the church was laid on August 23, 1903. The first burial in the parish cemetery, which was co-located with the church building, was an infant daughter of Archangel Denvito and took place April 12, 1904, before the church building was dedicated. The cemetery was originally known as St. Elizabeth, then as Calvary Cemetery (a common name in this county), later as Mt. Calvary, and finally, from about 1930, as St. Elizabeth Cemetery again. A new church building was constructed in 1954 on Main Street away from the cemetery. The church was closed in1993. Only the cemetery remains, under the administration of Sacred Heart parish.
The cemetery is located in Union Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and is # 11774 (Roswell Catholic Cemetery) in "Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003", compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The cemetery is registered with the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing (ODRE) as St. Elizabeth Cemetery with registration license number CBR.0000981935.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the cemetery is 1080392 (Saint Elizabeth Cemetery).
