The Golden Stars
'Tis Maytime and the joys of life are green.
Thro' the bleak winter they were stripped and bare,
Their leaves were blown afield, you were not there.
But far away and the great sea between!
Now you are back with honor, with the sheen
Of Victory on your helmets. From his lair
The Brutal foe is driven in despair
And you are home beneath a sky serene!
We sent you forth with blessings, yet the fears
Of hideous slaghter smote upon our ears-
But now at last we greet you as of yore!
The white stars here again! Yet mid our cheers
We still can see, across a blur of tears,
The golden stars=of those who come no more!
