South Norfolk District
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
For forty-six years at the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century, the Vicar here was Frederick Cavell. He was the father of the legendary heroine Nurse Edith Cavell, who was born at the temporary parsonage in Swardeston (still standing) on 4th December 1865. Edith Cavell worked as a nurse in Belgium during WW1. She was executed by the Germans for treason for saving the lives of soldiers in Brussels from all sides without distinction. She is commemorated in the church and her name appears on the Swardeston War Memorial.
