The Elijah D. Hardin Sr. Cemetery is the oldest of the Hardin cemeteries in Siam, Tennessee where there have been many people with the surname of Hardin, all descended from William Hardin, b. 1778. This particular cemetery is on land once owned by Elijah D. Hardin Sr, b. 1801 and d. 1882 who had 19 children by three wives. He is buried here in an unknown grave that may be marked only by a large field stone. There are a large number of other unmarked graves in the cemetery, evidenced by raised areas of dirt and other field stones. We know, from family and civil records, the names of some who are in the unmarked graves.
The cemetery is about 100 feet wide and 75 feet deep as viewed from the dirt road entrance. It is surrounded on three sides by a mature forest. There is a small old cedar grove near the lower left part of the cemetery that is similar to the Nave-Hess cemetery in Siam where Elijah's father William is buried. Surrounding the center and bottom parts of the cemetery, where are the oldest graves (that are unmarked), on the left and right perimeters of the cemetery, are a variety of mostly readable more modern tombstones. Under the cedar trees, in addition to field stones are two government-issued military service stones for Elijah D. Hardin/Harden Jr who served the Union in the Civil War.
The cemetery is in need of improvements, including a fence, a sign, and a local caretaker. It is generally poorly cared for compared to the tidy nearby Joseph G. Hardin Cemetery (Jade Road). There is evidence of some soil erosion due to the exposure of the hill during heavy rains. I added a few American flags for the veterans and some plastic flowers before taking photos of the cemetery.
The last known burial here was 2008.
