|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Note: one source says this graveyard was also known as 'the College Graveyard'. Others say it was once part of the nearby Holy Trinity Catholic church and this cemetery was said to be the 2nd one used before they bought the larger Holy Rood cemetery on Wisconsin Ave. Several websites and blogs detail the many stories concerning this and the others; used for this description, notes were gleaned from The Georgetown Voice blog and the Glover Park History website.
When construction began in 1931 for a new dormitory (Copley Hall), workers found the remnants of it about 100 ft north of the new building. To say that it was overgrown with weeds, broken markers, and other assorted debris is a mild description. Today, the Reiss Science Center sits atop this area. This means it is not to be confused with several other known and well-kept burial sites on the campus grounds today. According to the sources noted above, those once buried here are said to have later been removed to the Mt. Olivet cemetery in the N.E. section of Washington, D.C. Other stories say most were removed to Holy Rood cemetery not too far away. Still, there remain some reports that say few were ever removed and were just bulldozed over and forgotten.
