Lewis and Clark County
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This extinct cemetery was located due south of the Capitol Building, Lewis and Clark County, NW¼, SW¼, Section 32, Township 10 North, Range 3 West. Burials occurred in this cemetery starting in December 1866, well before the land was deeded to the Right Reverend John B. Brondel, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Helena, Montana. That deed, dated January 29, 1891, from Ernest F. and Teresa Hahn, John C. and M. E. Paulsen, Francis and Frances Adkinson, John and Theresia Immel, A. and Annie Dougherty, and Mary Voss, to Right Reverend John B. Brondel, clearly states ". . . containing in all one acre of ground and enclosing only ground occupied by graves." A deed dated December 13, 1961 from the Roman Catholic Bishop of Helena, a sole corporation, to Diehl Ranch Co., a Montana corporation, Helena, Montana, states ". . . containing in all one acre of ground and enclosing only ground occupied by graves (removed before date of this deed)." Since it states that the bodies were removed well before 1961, it is unknown where the majority of the bodies were moved. Three were moved to Forestvale Cemetery. Perhaps the majority was moved to St. Mary's Cemetery. Graves could have been removed to Resurrection Cemetery after 1907. The one acre plot where the original cemetery was located is now divided and overlaid with homes and the land is fully landscaped.
