William Caldwell was commissioned by King George III as the first militia officer for the middle area of Virginia and served in the French & Indian War.
Before 1770 his widow and children moved to an area between Mill Creek and Mudlick Creek, Newberry District, South Carolina.
A settlement was formed, a mill constructed and a tiny cemetery laid out.
The site of the cemetery is one mile west of Mudlick Creek, Newberry Co., on S.C. highway 65 (Mudlick Rd.) east of the juncture with S.C. highway 56.
