Cemetery notes and/or description:
Brownfield Family Cemetery

South Union Township
Fayette County, Pennsylvania

16 Known Marked Graves

Care should be taken to not confuse this cemetery with the Brownfield Smithfield Family Cemetery, Georges Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

This old family burying ground is located about 200 yards west of the old homestead of Benjamin Brownfield, Sr. born in 1755. His son, Benjamin Brownfield, Jr. was born on the old homestead and was known throughout Fayette County, as "Colonel Ben." Ben, Jr. lived to be over 100 years and is buried on these grounds as is also his father and many others. The burying ground is a plot of ground that measures about 45 feet by 50 feet.

The cemetery was recorded in 1956 and at that time, there were stated to be 16 inscribed stones as well as "numerous other graves which were not marked, except by fieldstones."

The 16 known graves, as of the year 1956, are listed below. Any additional listings would be speculative.

Benjamin Brownfield, Sr., died 1823,(1755-1823);
Benjamin Brownfield, Jr., died 1880, (1780-1880);
Ruth Brownfield (wife of Benj. Jr.), died 1856;

Driving directions by Ken O'Neal in 2004: "From Hopwood, take the Hopwood Fairchance Road toward Fairchance. Turn right onto Brownfield Rd, go about 1 mile to a sharp right bend. Turn left on Rock Road at the bend. Go to the gate, park and follow the ATV trail to pine trees on the right. The trail turns left past the pines. Follow it through the pine trees. The ATV trail makes a sharp right and a walking path bears left. Follow the path 100 yards to the cemetery."
