Officially organized in 1842 when Henderson was still in Granville County, this Episcopal church was named "Church of the Holy Innocents" in memory of the young son of Sarah and John Summerville Eaton, John Rush Eaton, who died 11 Sept 1841 at the age of 13. The original church was located at the corner of Garnett and Church streets on land donated by Lewis Reavis. By 1879, the congregation had outgrown the old building and construction was begun on the new church on Chestnut Street, which is still in use today.
The memorial garden and curved brick columbarium were added to the rear of the church in 1988.
