Church of the Austin Friars, Stafford
Forebridge
Stafford
Stafford Borough
Staffordshire  England

Cemetery notes and/or description:
The Austin Friars was the only one in Staffordshire, located in Forebridge, south of Stafford in the parish of Castle Church. Founded in 1344 by Ralph, Lord Stafford for himself and his ancestors and Humphrey de Hastang, his brother-in-law and Archdeacon of Coventry. The foundation was granted in 1343 by the Pope with the stipulation of twelve friars, and was later granted five acres. The first prior was John of Wirksworth until at least 1375. The friary site extended south-west from the Green in Forebridge, with the Roman Catholic church of St. Austin on part of the site. The land was leased for the building of the first church in 1788 by the Berington family, who had bought the Stanfords' property in 1610. The friary survived until the dissolution when the injunctions were read by Richard Ingworth, the Bishop of Dover on the ninth of August, 1538, and Henry, Lord Stafford, removed his family monuments.
