Cemetery notes and/or description:
From March 1907 until 1931, this was the site of a home for the "indigent elderly" run by Napier Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.
Up to 100 people lived here and those in good health were expected to help with cleaning, kitchen duties or in the vegetable garden and orchard.
Men over 65 and women over 60 were accommodated, until after World War I when all residents were men who were "chronic cases or broken down in health returned soldiers."
Rules were strict. The penalty for disobeying the total ban on alcohol was immediate discharge. Visitors were allowed only between 2-4 pm on Wednesdays, Sundays and public holidays. Lights out time was 8 pm.
The home was brick with a tile roof and 15 men died when the buildings collapsed in the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake. The home was never rebuilt. Surviving residents were evacuated temporarily to Southern Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Wairarapa and Wanganui and were sent to Napier boarding houses or private homes when they returned.
