|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Town Bank, NJ was settled before 1685. The site of the village was about 4 miles north of Cape May Point. Whaling was the reason for the establishment of this area originally called Portsmouth. The earliest known burial ground in Cape May was at Portsmouth. By the 1700 whales were no longer being spotted. People left the area and the settlement and cemetery were lost to the encroachment of the sea. The last time it was seen was about 1750. The original site is now located about 1/2 mile out in the Bay. It is said that some of the graves were moved to other cemeteries.
