Cemetery notes and/or description:
Original name of cemetery is currently unknown. It is an unmaintained cemetery. It is located on the western end of Groundhog Road (NC state road #1600), off Asheville Highway east of Canton. It is located 2/10 mile east of the western end of Groundhog Road, and is at the western end of a bridge over Norfolk Southern railroad tracks. It is on the north side of Groundhog Road, between it and the railroad tracks on a small knoll. There is one large stone with the name of J. D. Justice on it, in the center of the site. A few small stones are scattered elsewhere. There are at least two theories as to the origin of this cemetery. According to Frank Pressley of Canton, the remains there may be those of workmen who died while building the railroad in the late 1800's. Another theory is that it is the burial site of a single family that died, essentially together, sometime in the 19th century. |
