Camp Release State Monument is located off Highway 212 on the edge of Montevideo, within the Camp Release State Memorial Wayside. The monument was dedicated on July 4, 1894 to commemorate the surrender of the Dakota people and the release of 269 captive women and children, which took place on September 26, 1862. This monument was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
