Städtischer Zentralfriedhof
(Municipal Central Cemetery)
Heinrich-Heine-Ring 77
18435 Stralsund
Tel.: 03831-390279
This is the largest of the 16 cemeteries in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, located at the Baltic Sea in the German State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The cemetery is non-denominational and owned and run by the city. It opened in 1920. In the middle of the cemetery is the Mourner's Hall. The cemetery also has a war grave section (Kriegsgräberstätte) with 1589 grave sites, a few sections for anonymous burials, and a few historic graves. The plots are mainly urn graves. Since 1997 many urn burials took place at the "urn circle" an area where - in several rows - burials took place around a "Tree of Memories".
Please note that the final resting places in Germany are not eternal, due to lack of space. This cemetery has a "period of repose" of 20 years. Once the time is up for a renewal of the "lease" the cemetery administration will place a small sticker on the gravestone to alert the family to contact the office of the cemetery. Unless the family of the deceased pays for another period of 20 years, or the grave is of historical importance (in that case the city of Berlin will carry the costs), it will be leveled and re-used. Leftover stones will be collected and eventually crushed and used as gravel in road construction.
Other burial places in Stralsund are:

Sankt-Marien-Kirche Stralsund
Jewish Cemetery of Stralsund
