St. Clair County
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Turkey Hill was the first settlement in St. Clair County, Illinois. It was located near Belleville, St. Clair County, Illinois. Some of the very first settlers in Illinois are probably buried in this cemetery.

I do not know what the condition of this cemetery is. I did find one record of someone being first buried here and later moved to a different cemetery. That may mean the cemetery is in bad shape.

I just learned that this cemetery has been destroyed, and all the tombstones dumped in a ravine near where it was, and the area is now a corn field.
I don't know when the destruction of the cemetery occurred, but such destruction is not legal unless specific legal steps are taken to condem the cemetery, etc. If you think your relatives may be buried here, the local St. Clair Genealogical Society may be able to provide GPS coordinates, etc. Law enforcement officers and local cemetery preservation people may be able to assist you in gaining access to the area.
