Lying beneath the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock Michigan are the remains of the men and women who left their homeland overseas to come to America for a better life in the Upper Peninsula Copper Country of Michigan.
The land that the Old Hancock Protestant Cemetery existed on what was originally owned by the Quincy Mining Company. This particular mining company operated around 1846 through 1945 with some attributes operating well into 1970's. There are records claiming that cemetery lots began selling circa 1866. Relying on the city of Hancock to embrace the responsibilities of the care and
maintenance of the sacred burials
A memorial park was created on the church grounds to honor those interred all those many years ago
