|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Located at the old Drakestown schoolyard adjacent to the Mount Olive Township border, the Old Burial Ground is noted in 19th century Morris County histories. The location is further confirmed from the description given in Volume 49 #1 Page 33 of The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey. Plotting the school property location on 19th century maps and using modern GPS mapping technology, with on-site searching and confirmation by Russ Worthington, the location of this temporarily "lost" burial ground is rediscovered.
In a letter dated 7 Sept. 1914, Mr. M. T. Thomas of Drakestown identified names of 14 persons he recalled as being buried in the schoolyard without markers. Also about 1914, Miss Mabel Thomas of Drakestown located and transcribed the Simon Collver and Jemima Collver gravestones in a letter to Mr. Robert H. Smith of Port Murray, N.J. These stones were confirmed by later researchers visiting the site on 26 March, 1937 and on 23 Sept. 1973.
We are much indebted to Russ Worthington, member of FindAGrave. His local knowledge and diligent on-the-ground searching has rediscovered the Old Burial Ground May 12, 2010. Thank you, Russ, for your interest and persistence in finding and documenting this historic burial ground.
