Add PhotosThis Yates cemetery was located at Big Spring, Page Co., Va. From Luray go North on Rt. 340 to Rt. 654, turn left & go approx. 200 yards go to where the cemetery was on the left side of Rt. 654.
The cemetery was enclosed by an ornamental fence with a nameplate ‘M. W. Yates' on the gate.
Shortly before construction began on a home, this James E. Yates cemetery mysteriously disappeared, as did 11 headstones & footstones.
This mysterious disappearance of the cemetery was brought to the attention of Eldon L. Yates and Daniel Harvey ‘Jack' Abbott, both of Page Co., Va. and both had ancestors buried in this Yates Cemetery.
Several articles pertaining to this missing cemetery were published by the Daily News Records, Harrisonburg, Va. on 27 Mar 1990, 19 Apr 1990, 09 May 1990 & 21 Jun 1990. The Page News and Courier, Luray, Va. also published several articles in the same vein on 29 Mar 1990, 19 Apr 1990 & 10 May 1990.
During the process of claiming the remains of the unmarked graves of M. Warfield Yates, a cast iron Civil War marker was discovered with the notation ‘Confederate Southern Army 1861 - 1865'. Also found was a small footstone with the notation, J. E. Y. in it's original location. This stone was at the base of a large tree with only 6 inches protruding above ground probably was overlooked when the other tombstones were removed.
