Cemetery notes and/or description:
Address:
Seestrasse 22 or Schlossplatz 1
83684 Tegernsee

Also known as Kloster or Schloss Tegernsee.

The Pfarrkirche Sankt Quirinus is part of the Kloster Tegernsee (Tegernsee Abbey), which was a Benedictine Abbey until 1803. It is now owned by the Bavarian Dukes of Wittelsbach. The buildings now house a Highschool and a brewery (Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee).
Underneath the St. Quirinus Church is a crypt which houses the remains of about 20 members of the Bavarian Dukes of Wittelsbach.
The form Duke in Bavaria was selected because in 1506 primogeniture had been established in the House of Wittelsbach resulting in there being only one Duke of Bavaria at any given time.
The burial plots are devised into three areas: the inner crypt, the outer crypt, and the grave chapel.
Some of the abbotts also found their final resting places inside the basilica.
The abbey itself was founded in the 8th century, the Baroque church dates back to the late 16th century. The last abbott was Gregor II. Rottenkolber, who closed the abbey in 1803. He died in 1810.
