KOROKORO Catholic Cemetery PETONE
off SH 2, Western Hutt Road, by turnoff to Korokoro, Petone
Lower Hutt
Lower Hutt City
Wellington  New Zealand

Cemetery notes and/or description:
This cemetery has been closed since 1956 by an Act of Parliament and they vested part of the land for street purposes. They authorised laying a drain through the cemetery, the removal and reinterment of certain human remains, the removal of headstones, monuments and grave surrounds, the levelling and planting of the grounds and the erection of a common monument.

In all, two rows of graves along the Western Hutt Road and one row along Korokoro Road (44 plots in total) were disinterred and later reinterred in July 1957. All other remains on the flat and hill have never been disturbed.
The memorial that has been erected records many, but not all, of those buried here.

The passage of time means that fewer and fewer people know that the piece of land at the foot of the Korokoro hill is a cemetery and is therefore sacred land.

The land had been gifted to the Catholic church by
Te Ati Awa chief Honiana Te Puni-kokopu

A newly restored monument, and other remaining monuments, were blessed at the anniversary service held at Korokoro cemetery in November 2007
The service also acknowledged those whose names are not recorded on the large cemetery memorial
