Herbertville is a small settlement on the eastern coast of the North Island, in the Tararua/Manawatu District, 143km south of Napier
The township was formerly known as Wainui, after the river running through the settlement, but was subsequently re-named Hebertville in honour of Joseph and Sarah Herbert, early settlers (1854) who gave the land for the local school and post office.
Herbertville is 92km east of Woodville via Dannevirke (66km), then on Weber Rd down through Tipapakuku, Kaitoki, Mangatoro
(an interesting story on early Mangatoro), Motea, Waipatiki, Weber, Ti Tree Point and then Wimbledon (9km from Herbertville)
At the turn of the century Herberville was a thriving community. It had a large hotel and several shops, a police station and a blacksmiths.
Schooners where beached on the vast expanse of shallow sandy beach on high tides and passengers and cargos were unloaded. The ships would then be re-floated on the next high tide and would carry on their way.
Horse drawn coach's then made their way inland towards the settlement of Dannevirke via Weber
There are 47 burials in the Herbertville Cemetery
