|Black Township (Somerset County)|
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This is the site of the original Ankeny Cemetery that was located on the Ankeny farm. This farm was later bought by the Derencin family and was known as the M. Derencin Farm. As of April 2003 the land was owned by the Ravella family. The following directions were obtained in April 2003 from Fred and Dolly Derencin. Fred's father had owned the farm and Fred was raised on that farm.
From Somerset (North Center Ave.) go up the hill past the Court House and Hospital. North Center Ave. turns into South Center Ave. Stay on South Center Ave. to Cannell Dr. Turn right onto Cannell Dr. Stay on Cannell Dr. to Edgewood Ave. Edgewwod Ave. turns into Water Level Rd. Stay on Water Level Rd. You will pass LaRue's Meat Market on your right. Go approximately one mile past the meat market. Turn right onto Pine Tree Rd. Go up Pine Tree Rd. to the top of the hill about 0.1 mile past Big Pine Rd. Pull off to the right (gravel pull off). Walk up the tree line about 0.5 mile to the top of the hill. Look toward your right across the open field. You will see a small hill covered with trees. The cemetery is on this hill under the trees. Walk across the field to reach the cemetery. It is in very bad condition due to the age of the stones and the ravages of the elements. The last person was buried there in 1915 (Franklin Walter). Many stones are unreadable, fallen or broken by age and falling trees.
*Note: The cemetery is on private property so make sure to get permission before visiting.
