Greater London England
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Developed when the Dominican Friars (Blackfriars or Preachers Friars) moved their priory from Holborn to the area between the River Thames and Ludgate Hill in 1276, and was the site of many historical events including the divorce hearing in 1529 of Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII, who dissolved the monastery in 1536. It was used as the Blackfriars Theatre until the building was destroyed, along with the records and graves, in the Great Fire of 1666. Now the site is the location of Blackfriars Station, and forms the northern bridge-head for both Blackfriars Bridge and Blackfriars Railway Bridge, alongside the road bridge called Blackfriars Millennium Pier.
