Sergeant Daniel Browett, who was president and lead scout of the Browett-Holmes Company, was scouting a route over the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range from California to Utah through Idaho, for returning soldiers. He was robbed and murdered, supposedly by Digger Indians, who axed, shot and, with arrows, mutilated him and his two companion scouts.
Daniel Browett, Ezra Heela Allen and Henderson Cox were found, by their commrades, buried at a location between Sly Park and Lake Valley, El Dorado County, California. It is named "Tragedy Spring", and became an International DUP Monument in 1967.
Located on Highway 88, in El Dorado County, at the US Forest Service Tragedy Spring Picnic Ground located on Tragedy Spring Road just west of Silver Lake. The Gravesite is located on a hillside just inside the El Dorado County line a few hundred feet from the entrance to the picnic site. There are signs and plaques commemorating the loss of these three men. The grave itself is a rock cairn that has been cemented in and a plaque place on the cairn itself.
