|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This cemetery was originially known as the Pullin Cemetery. Now it is known as the Shumate Cemetery or Shumate/Vance Cemetery. This appears to be a very old cemetery and probably have many unmarked graves. The Pullins lived about midway between McDowell and Clover Creek, Virginia. Most likely this cemetery was once located on the Pullin's property. It's my understanding from old property records that Loftus Pullin, Sr. own serveal hundred acres along Route 678. Most likely Loftus and his wife Nancy Ann Jane (Usher) Pullin are buried here. There are no tombstone stones for Loftus, Nancy Ann Jane, their son Samuel and his wife, Sarah (Henry) Pullin.
In the book, THE BICENTENNIAL HISTORY OF BATH COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1791-1991, The Bath County Historical Socitey, published by the Heritage House Publishing, Marceline, Missouri there is this statement "Buried: (refering to Samuel and Sarah (Henry) Pullin buried in the Pullin Cemetery, (now Shutmate or Shutmate-Vance Cemetery)."
The directions to this cemetery aren't good. South from McDowell, Virginia on Route 678 - distance not given -- to the Kermit Sloan farm -- cemetery recorded October 1983 by Emma Matheny and today (2008) this farm may be owned by someone else.
