|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Earley Town Council owns and manages Mays Lane Cemetery. It is situated at the bottom of Mays Lane, off the Wokingham Road in Earley and was an extension of the church graveyard when that was full and no more burials could take place - that was back in the 1930s. Mays Lane was an 'overflow' burial ground and it is about 1 mile from the church, so it is a completely different graveyard. Earley Town Council took over the running of the Mays Lane Burial ground about 40 years ago. This was because of a number of factors including other churches in the area needing space for the burial of their deceased and people of other faiths needing a burial place. So the two graveyards are completely separate.
The older part of the burial ground was formerly owned by St Peters Church as a church cemetery and has been retained in its previous state although the Town Council has effected various improvements including a tarmac road and the provision of entrance gates to try to reduce the possibility of any vandalism. The gates are generally opened around dawn and closed at dusk. The newer section is managed as a lawn cemetery. An Extension has been consecrated. A small section has been left unconsecrated. An additional area is reserved for a Muslim Burial area.
