From Spur, Texas take Farm Road 261 southwest about 11 miles. At the cemetery sign, turn right on unimproved road and go a half mile or less.
Southwest of what is now Spur, Texas is a cemetery named Tap. This cemetery was started in May, 1886 when Mr. Barger was buried on his land east of the house in which he was living. Mr. Barger was murdered by Jess Addamson after a controversy arose between the two men. Mrs. Barger died of tuberculosis and was laid to rest beside her husband in August of the same year, 1886. In a short time Mrs. Adelia Parrish and her infant child passed away at the birth of the child and were buried in a line with the Barger graves.
This cemetery was known as Tap Cemetery until about 1910, when a new school building was constructed near the cemetery and the top of the building was painted red. The name was changed to Red Top and was called this for a number of years until the school building was moved away and repainted. It then began to be called Red Mud because it is located near the Little Red Mud Creek and is still known by that name today.
The first two acres of the cemetery were donated. The acre on the north was donated by W. H. and Belle Martin and the acre on the south was donated by Jimmie and Maggie Sparks. Later, Wallace and Susie Hinson gave an additional two acres. |
