Acquinton Church Cemetery
King William
King William County
Virginia  USA

Cemetery notes and/or description:
Acquinton Church was built in 1734. Although owned by the Episcopalians, it was used by various denominations as a meeting house prior to 1866 when it was sold to the Methodists. A deed conveyng the property is recorded at the King William Court House.

The last group to use the church was a German Baptist Brethren (Dunkard) congregation led by Elder Benjamin Franklin Garber, who had moved his large family from Timberville, Rockingham County, VA in 1893 to establish a Brethren church in this region. His untimely death in 1923 resulted in the dissolution of the group.
The church remained vacant and fell into disrepair. The roof of the church collapsed in the mid-1940's. Upkeep of the grounds for many years was done by Garber children and grandchildren, many of whom lived in close proximity to the church. With the subsequent passing of those who faithfully mowed the grounds for the past 8 decades, the maintanence was almost non-existant, with exception of an occasional mowing by some of the Garber great-grandchildren who live within a few miles of the church.

The King William Historical Society acquired the deed for this church site in 1996. In 2007, a local archeologist who has had a lifelong desire to see these ruins restored delivered a presentation to the membership of the historical society in which she detailed the history and the case for restoration. Also a local citizen came forward in June of 2008 with a plan to stabilize the ruins for the enjoyment those who visit the grounds. The King William Historical Society has been working with him to achieve this goal, and completion is expected by January of 2010.

The listings for this cemetery are not complete - many of the stones for the older graves are missing.
