Grande Tombe de Villeroy
Also known as: Great Tomb of Villeroy
Route D129, Chauconin-Neufmontiers
Villeroy
Departement de Seine-et-Marne
Īle-de-France  France
Postal Code: 77124

Cemetery notes and/or description:

Even though it is officially known as La Grande Tombe de Villeroy, it is actually within the communal boundaries of Chauconin-Neufmontiers on the road between the two towns. The soldiers buried here were all killed in the area during the Battle of the Ourcq, an early phase of the First Battle of the Marne, the first Allied victory of World War I. When French military cemeteries were consolidated in the 1930s, it was decided to leave these early casualties of the war where they were and erect this spectacular mosaic art-deco monument over their communal grave.
