Cemetery notes and/or description:
Belle Grove Plantation is located in the Shenandoah Valley near Middletown, Virginia. The limestone house was completed in 1797 for Major Isaac Hite and his wife Nelly, who was the sister of future President James Madison. In 1815, the plantation was at its prime and covered more than 7000 acres of land. On October 19th, 1864 the Battle of Cedar Creek took place all around the plantation, and reenactments are performed there every year. The slave cemetery is located in a field behind the barn at the rear of the property. It is enclosed by a split-rail fence and is well maintained. There are no headstones as one would normally expect to find in a cemetery. Instead, the graves of the slaves who died working for the plantation are marked with simple stones. Documentation as to who is buried there is minimal and research is being done to discover as much as possible. Belle Grove Plantation is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, being added in 1969.
